Garment Details: NIETOS is the ultimate coat to keep you warm in the winter months or provide protection during the transitional seasons. This versatile pattern offers two variations to choose from.

The long coat version features quilted padding for maximum warmth and is ideal for advanced sewists. With side slits, an inside pocket, front zipper, press studs, elasticated sleeves, and a protective hood, this coat will keep you cosy from neck to toe. The drawstring at the waist allows you to adjust the fit to accommodate the layers you want to wear underneath.

Designer: Mila Moisio is TAUKO’s editor-in-chief and one of the founders. The NIETOS was inspired by Finland's long winters. Mila spends a lot of time outdoors with her rescue dog, regardless of the season, and firmly believes that the weather is a matter of choice when it comes to clothing. Biting frost, freezing winds, or the icy humidity of Helsinki winters are easily overcome by wrapping up in a warm, padded garment.

Sizing: This pattern is available in sizes 1 (2, 3, 4, 5) (6, 7, 8, 9). Choose your size based on your hip circumference. Add a recommended positive ease of 5.9–8.7"/15–22 cm around the hip. Choose the size that is closest to your hip measurement.

In the photos, Usva is wearing a sample coat with an oversized fit of 16.1"/41 cm positive ease around the hip. Melissa is wearing a sample jacket with 6.7"/17 cm positive ease around the hip. The width of the back shoulder line has been adjusted by adding 1.8"/4.6 cm.

Tauko's sizing information can be found by clicking here.

Suitable fabrics: For the quilt batting coat version, you’ll need a main fabric, lining, and batting fabric. Choose medium to heavy-weight materials like cotton canvas for the main fabric, 5.3–7.5oz/180–250 gsm batting (preferably natural fibres such as wool, cotton, or bamboo, or recycled polyester), and batiste or other breathable yet durable fabrics for the lining. For the unlined jacket version, choose heavyweight fabrics with non-toxic waterproof treatments. Feel free to experiment with wool, plush fabrics, or twill for added texture and style.

The sample coat is made in “Leafly Bold Bottle Green Canvas” (100% cotton, 11.80 oz/400 gsm), with wool fleece batting (85% new wool, 15% polyester, 5.3 oz/180 gsm) and the lining is from the designer’s stash. For the coat drawstring, 0.6"/1.5 cm wide natural tubular ribbon (100% organic cotton). The jacket version is made in dark green water-repellent canvas (100% organic cotton, 8.9 oz/300 gsm).
